I am starting fresh in both 1.08 and 1.09b at the same time. So far I have a sorc in 1.08 which I plan to MF using orb and static field. I have a bowazon in 1.09b, but I don't plan on using her for MF. Can anyone recommend good starting MF characters for these patches? Is a summoner necro still visible and if so what are the skills choices for these versions?

Also know barbs can be used for MF but I have really never played a barb past normal and have no idea how to build one. Feel free to share you barb MF builds.

I will eventually get around to classic and other patches so feel free to share your insights from any patch.

MF is basically completely broken in 1.08 and boss drop tables are pretty much the same as pre-lod (meaning bosses aren't special and they just drop regular mob gear). So MFing will essentially just be you running around killing stuff in the game world without using any MF gear.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. I guess cows with a fast killing character is considered the best method due to mob density?

Also does MF gear still matter or is it just that target farming bosses is a waste?

Both. MF gear doesn't matter and target farming doesn't work either since there no special boss drop tables for the most part for the act bosses.

Yea 1.09 was the first patch where the original expansion was complete and all core systems are working. I recommend 1.09b specifically.

I was targeting 1.08 for what I understood to be the best version of Windforce. Seems this may actually be a lost cause. I might do some more research on the patch and try to find a different aspect to focus on.

Yea 1.08 is the only patch that can drop the pre-1.09 WF since it's the first version of the LOD game that has a complete TC implemented, but the magic finding, and boss drop loot tables didn't come out official until Patch 1.09. But in 1.09 they also changed, nerfed, and buffed a lot of the items. So the 1.08 WF was changed, and so were other nice unique stats like Arkaine's Valor, Shako, Gaze, etc. When you play 1.07 and 1.08, you are playing it for a whole different reason than you would play 1.09. That's the beauty of time traveling. You are limited in some ways, but you are also able to do other things that are no longer possible.

Yeah, I heard some of the items were insane. I never had any great gear back in the day when I used to play on battlenet and wanted to finally get ahold of the good stuff.

I tried to get a 1.08 WF the legit way back in like 2018. I deduced the most efficient area in the game since MF is broken (the Icy Cellar, as it has the most unique monsters+Snapchip who drop TC90), found a super efficient map where it was one teleport away, and then grinded it 12 hours a day for nearly 2 months. In that process, I found a Mal Rune and also Mavina's Bow (something you can't rack in 1.07 either) but no WF. Since the map was so simple I was able to make a bot and ran it 24/7, it finally got a windforce after nearly 2 months. So yeah, you can get them, but you're looking at a 5-6 month grind that will crush your soul.

The only real practical way to get one is cheating, aka using the Souls Ritual to hit the super high breakpoints and force uniques. This is also the only practical way to get Stormspire which is an Archon Staff, arguably the rarest item in the history of D2.

I think the main reason people stop by 1.08 is to try to roll a 25% FCR crafted amulet, or roll a lightning resist Stone of Jordan, or find a Highlord's Wrath which has FRW in this patch.
