Hi fellow D2 time travellers,
Since this forum is dedicated for those of us who enjoy playing old versions of Diablo 2, I wonder if any of you ever tried playing the Diablo 2 Shareware and try to push it to its limits? How high a level you can reach, what kind of gear you can find/gamble, best methods to make gold etc.
For those who never played the shareware, here are the limitations:
I always liked the idea of playing in limited game spaces and pushing them to their limits. For example, in D1's shareware (named Spawned Diablo), me and a friend played for a bit together on Battle.net. My friend even made a blog, describing our adventures and discoveries, and theorycrafting here. We even tried PvPing. I eventually reached the max level there (15).
I digress, but for D2's Shareware, since monsters always give at least 1xp, in theory, with an infinite amount of free time you could reach level 99. Obviously, no one will go for that. But by leveling up enough, you unlock higher level items in gambling, meaning you can eventually gamble items you wouldn't usually get during early Act 1 Normal.
I wonder how far we could push this game playing legit. Since I think it is based on patch 1.04, you have the 3% chance of gambling uniques, meaning you could eventually get SoJs, and most of the low level uniques by gambling.
For those who want to have fun cheating a bit, I took a quick look at the mpq files, and all affixes, and base items are present in the Shareware. I dabbled around and gave myself Executioner Swords. They still worked, but there is no associated graphics to them, so they are invisible.
Even the monsters.txt file seems complete. Though I didn't try to spawn other monsters to see what would happen. I wonder if their AI is working. I'm guessing they have no graphics, if this would cause a crash or just result in immobile/invisible monsters?

For those who never played the shareware, here are the limitations:
- The only class available is the Barbarian
- Only the first two quests of Act 1 are available, can't go further than the Cold Plains and the Burial Grounds
- Only level 1 skills are available
- Single Player only
