Hi all,

In Diablo II Resurrected, classic mode is not exactly "true" classic. Many of the changes introduced in LoD, through to 1.14d and into D2R and beyond have been applied to classic mode too.

From exploring D2 Cactus, and reading through threads in this forum, I can see that 1.06b is considered "true classic". Notable differences in D2R classic compared to 1.06b, is that vendors sell mana pots, and synergies exist.

In order to capture the true classic feel of the game pre-LoD, but take advantage of the beautiful D2R graphics, I've decided to create a mod that restores the settings of 1.06b wherever possible.

Shamelessly using Claude, I built the mod. It essentially grabbed the data tables from 1.06b, compared them with the latest D2R tables, and then adjusts them accordingly. You can pick and choose which aspects of True Classic that you want to enable. Some changes cannot be modified due to existing in the complied code rather than the data tables (e.g. respecs can't be disabled).

I'm hoping to seek some help with confirming that the configurations that Claude has determined for the mod are indeed correct, and true to 1.06b. I was introduced to D2 through D2R, so I never played the game in its original release. But having explored D2R classic mode, and then playing with Cactus, I can see that the way the game was originally intended to be played is quite different from where the game is to day. Don't get me wrong - I love D2R RotW too. I just wish that D2R classic mode is, well, True Classic.

Current options

no_skill_synergiesRemoves the v1.10 skill synergy system entirely, tooltips included.
no_spell_cooldownsRemoves casting delays (cooldowns) from all player skills.
classic_leechLife/mana steal at full strength in NM/Hell — undoes both the 1.07 global halving and v1.10's per-monster leech cap.
classic_start_skillNo free skill at level 1 (v1.10 gave the Sorceress Fire Bolt, the Necromancer Raise Skeleton).
no_high_level_xp_penaltyNo XP penalty past level 70 (added in 1.10).
classic_potion_potencyPotions restore base amounts — no per-class multipliers.
classic_skeleton_armyOne skeleton/mage per skill point at every level.

classic_weapon_damage1.06b base weapon damage — 1.07/1.08 raised it on 78 weapons.

Hey @RichardPfister,

This is cool. Although due note that this forum and this section are focused on Diablo II (2000/2001) and not D2R at all, including mods for D2R that are trying to make the game more like the original. I will allow the post.

synergies were added in 1.10 witch some people don't like but biggest problem is they increased the monsters hp and resists well no updating classic items so its just classic but way harder...and some cases impossible... as well nerfed the rares... and then never got an update after that...even in d2r...

there are many things still broken in 1.06

all patches are like open betas as some only lasted like a moth or so. just depends on the person and what they like or not.

best i would play 1.06 and see or play online retro d2.com atm

gambling is like 3% uni and can only have one item if its in inventory you will get rares.

not all skills have no cool down.

never got a free skills just a weapon with + 1 skill

think potions is random at how much it heals

ya gems no level and stats are random

That's not correct. Synergies were added in 1.10. When it comes to Monster HP increases, there were balance changes for sure in 1.07, but the biggest HP increases (and Blizzard North not adjusting the weapon base damage values) also happened in 1.10.

ill have to play 1.07 classic haha...i played alot of 1.06b even thow retrod2 made changes...

well i did a quick test and some build look fine on 1.07 classic well other are broken. with out proper gear hard to guess what works or not.

mancer mostly fine poison broken from before corps explosion think ranges nerft. blood golom and iron maiden look fine bone damage loos good
skllys too week get 1 per level thow...

socer looks fine orb fire ball hydra. lighting looks week but you got static

barb hard to say with out gear berserk looks fine ww damage was low but i only had a 85 damage 1h weapon

pally pho has long cool down. hammer looks fine but there immunity so hybrid. looks like need alot of dex for max block

bow zon valkery said 4k hp... but its not 4k...so...a bit week. damage looks week i had a 300 damage bow but doable at slower i guess also immunity might no be able to kill

so people dont like because of some of the broken builds on 1.06 like socer slow orb, huge static range, fast casts

macer range

hdin no immunitys

rares nerfed and need highter level to use making the grind much more.

@RichardPfister Perhaps I'm missing something, but why bother to develop a mod in D2R to play "True Classic" when you can just play the real thing, and it's not a mod? I think if people want to play D2R they will, but if they want Classic, there are better ways to get that experience (i.e. Cactus). Anyways, I'm sorry that I don't have a more constructive comment, lol. But this is what came to mind when reading your post. I respect your hard work from a development standpoint though. I think @galaxyhaxz could easily answer your technical questions if so inclined. Welcome to the forum! :)🍻
