It began in 1996...
I remember being a 4 year old, watching my brother running through the Diablo I demo of the beta version. The one where the butcher was included and spawned on level 1, the only level in this demo. I remember how no matter what he tried to do, the butcher would always kill my brothers character. A foreshadowing of what the actual game was going to feel like. Yet, I never played the game myself. i was way too young afterall. I only got to watch my brother play the amazing games that were Diablo I, Warcraft II and so on...

Fast forward to 2001!
Diablo II got released. And my brothers and I were playing it non stop. While I never managed to beat the game, my brother actually got through half of nightmare, playing it completely blind. Just offline mode since we didn't have any internet. The game was brutal and amazing at the same time. I won't waste any of your time explaining why I think so. I'm sure you all already know about that.

For whatever reason, we never got the expansion of the game. Might have been, because my older brother was too tired from grinding the heck out of the original.

It is the year 2005!
I just got my hands on a bestseller collection consisting of: Starcraft + Brood War, Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition and, of course, Diablo I. And I felt right at home.
You see: Pre expansion Diablo II was much more like it's predecessor than many people believe. And I loved every minute of it. By now we finally had an internet connection at home, so I got to meet the good, the bad and the ugly people playing on battle.net. I had a blast playing this in multi player, I can tell you that xD
The year 2008...
I remember my parents buying me Diablo II: LoD as gift when I was sick. Don't think they would have gotten me it, if i was healthy at the time, considering how terrifying the cover of the box looked. :)
So, I start the game and am greeted to a lot of new features. "Nice!" I thought, not realizing yet, how much the game has changed...
Of course, since I had access to the internet, playing on battle.net was one of the first things I did, but what I experienced was not what I expected. At first, I was in awe about all the cool runewords, charms, the added synergies and the mercenaries actually being helpful. It seemed to me that it was the only way to play the game through hell. Why did we never get the expansion in the past? Playing without runewords like infinity must have been horrible. How do you even deal with immunities?
Yea! That's me, not remembering that immunities didn't exist in the first place. xD

I started to get tired of the games repetitive nature. Farming runes, farming the standard unique and set items that everyone else used, creating the same rune words that everyone used, skilling your character the same way that everyone else did... it felt weird. Nevermind the painful experience of playing a character build that relies on physical damage. There is a lot of things that didn't feel okay about how people treated the game. And then there was the monstrosity called d2jsp... I won't even comment on that one...

I remember there being a thing called Diablo III, as well. It was weird and gross, like a fever dream...
Let's not talk about that one! xD

Coming back for more in 2021...
Despite all that, I always came back to the game, playing with friends that I met back when playing online. That's why I got Diablo II Resurrected. And I was on and off every once in a while, never really getting the same enjoyment I had when I played Diablo I back around 2005-2007. I always thought that it was the superior game and that the Diablo II developers made a few mistakes, with how they handled the sequel.

A change of wind in 2024!
I remember hearing about how great the whirlwind barbarian was in classic D2R, so I thought about giving it a shot...
And I was shocked! Why did this ever get removed? I understand that it feels pretty op, but still! Let me try out a zealer and bowazon next... Oh, nevermind! They suck, somehow? I guess they were always bad, right?
I just started to realize, that what I was playing, wasn't the game that I remembered from my childhood. But it wasn't after I beat classic mode with each character on HC mode and started to tell a new friend I made in D2R about it, that I got the wakeup call...

"That ain't classic D2!"
That's what he said! I knew that he was right, but how different could it have been. "You didn't just casually go to hell difficulty in HC, back then. It was way too brutal!" he added. "Really?" I asked.
See, my buddy, unlike me, was in his 20s when he played the original Diablo II. He played online from the very start and has a better memory of it since he wasnt that young at the time. He experienced everything, including the exodus of many players when LoD dropped.

Curiosity got the better of me and I started searching. This is how I stumbled on a series of videos on Youtube, in which MrLlamaSC played through v1.00 of Diablo II. Not even 5 minutes into the video, I start searching for a way to get this to run my pc. I eventually found the download provided by fearedbliss and installed the 1.00 files manually, since I couldn't get it to run proberly via cactus. xD

And I started playing... And getting my a** handed to me! The game was insanely hard. I still remember my first time my barbarian died at the hands of abyss knights at the River of Flame. For some reason, enemy casters are so much more brutal in these old patches. After unlocking HC mode, I created another barbarian with the mission to beat the game on hell difficulty...
What a nightmare!
I remember entering the Duriel fight and using battle cry as he charged me. And he just critical hit me for over 900 damage! If it weren't for battle orders I would have been toast. I persevered somehow and beat the game.
I remember questioning my friends memory, when he claimed that amazon players would buy a pike as soon as possible and then start fighting their way through the Chaos Sanctuary using 'Jab'. That couldn't be right! But here I was with my amazon, in hell difficulty, seeing a King's Pike of Frost at the vendor... And I bought it! And I shredded De Seis! And I shredded Infector! And I shredded Vizier! With a pike I bought from a vendor!
I will never question my buddy again! xD

And nothing was the same anymore...
I mentioned before, that I prefered Diablo I over Diablo II. Well, I still prefer it over Diablo II: Resurrected. But over the original, pre expansion version of Diablo II?
No way! There is so much I can say about the game, but it would make this post even longer. After watching some interviews of David Brevik again, I finally get what he meant to say, when he compared Diablo II to other arpgs and mentioned the issues, that most modern diablo-like games have. He was never comparing them to the modern version of Diablo II, but to the original Diablo II, that left it's mark in gaming history.

I made it my mission to beat this game with each class on each difficulty on HC mode, as well as playing some of the other patches with different classes, in order to get a grasp of what the game has once been. I am recording all the gameplay and uploading it as well. This might take me a long time, since I don't have much free time, but I will eventually get there. And once that is done, I can hopefully make an analysis on why these older patches were so great and why there will never be another Diablo game like Diablo I and Diablo II.

I just recently found this forum, as I wanted to reach out to the person who made this possible.

So HUGE thanks, fearedbliss!
If it weren't for you, I would probably be playing D2R and teleporting to Lower Kurast chests for runes with my sorc, or farming Andariel a hundred times over just to drop me a bunch of unique items that no one ever needs or even remembers.
Thank you, for making it possible to relieve the golden days of Diablo II!

Welcome to the forums @TWolfMech :). I'm glad my videos and Cactus have been able to help you enjoy Diablo II for even longer! There are a few things and suggestions I have:

1. We need to fix your Cactus installation situation. It's relatively easy to get Cactus up and running and I've also recorded a new video recently which is on my YouTube channel. You can see it here. There are also written instructions here.
2. I would highly recommend for you to upgrade from 1.00 to 1.05b. That fixes a bunch of issues and it's the last stable version of pre-LOD (it's also the one I play.. avoid 1.06/b). Once you are on this version, you will be able to find Lances which were enabled in 1.04. So instead of using the Pike in late game, you'll be able to upgrade to Lances for both your Barb and Jabazon :).
3. The next patch I want to give a more series and deeper look is 1.08 specifically. I've made some characters on 1.08 a few years ago, but I want to dive deeper into it from the LOD perspective. There are several differences, lack of features, and bugs that exist in 1.08 that don't exist in 1.07 or 1.08 that I believe end up giving it a similar feeling to pre-LOD but with some of the expansion core functionality and itemization:

a) MF is completely broken.

In pre-LOD, I pretty much mostly ignore MF and just let the RNG decide when to give me items. This basically means that I'm not paying attention to MF as much and just playing the game. I sometimes do experiment with MF in pre-LOD, but it's not something I primarily focus on. Given that fact, the broken MF of 1.08 (and 1.07) won't really be an issue since we can just continue to play the patch like pre-LOD, and ignore that attribute.

b) TC is fully implemented in 1.08 (but not in 1.07).

This is one of the main (and several reasons) to play 1.08 over 1.07. The developers didn't have enough time to fully implement the TC system before the 1.07 discs went RTM. Of course 1.07 players end up doing Rack Runs in combination with Hell LK not being dependent on Area Level in order to be able to drop items that were in the files, but weren't in the TC system. That means you can rack things like The Grandfather and Arkaine's Valor in 1.07 LK, but since the TC system was fixed in 1.08, you would need to rack those in Halls of Vaught which has a high enough aLvl to drop those items. The thing is, personally I've found Rack Running to be boring and I would rather just actually play the game to find them, thus having broken MF + working TC means I can do what I do in pre-LOD, just play the game, ignore MF, kill monsters, and let RNGesus bless us when the time is right. Till then, we need to play strategically and figure out a way to survive with our limited resources.

c) Runewords didn't exist in 1.08 Single Player (and 1.07).

The limited set of initial runewords that existed formally in 1.09 didn't exist in 1.08 in Single Player. The Single Player 1.08 files don't have them at all. However, they were introduced in 1.08 Battle.net. So Blizzard North must have made an online update to the Runes.txt to include those server side. However, since we are playing Single Player, we can again continue to ignore Runewords completely and just enjoy the itemization that comes with: Rares/Sets/Uniques + Crafted Items + New Recipes and the Runes themselves, which will function as further items for socketable item customization. IIRC we already have the "Add one socket to item with SOJ" recipe in 1.07/1.08, so we should be able to mess around with these customizations. The 1.09 runewords are not that strong, but in a way it's nice we don't need to think about Runewords at all in 1.08. There are also some bugs with Runewords randomize attributes in 1.08, but since we don't have them at all in SP, we can again ignore this.

d) Crafting and Deadly Crafts

To a limited extent, I really do enjoy that the initial 8 runes (El-Ort) were used for the Crafted Item Recipes. In addition, you can craft with any Weapon/Armor. This provides an interesting experience. In addition to this, the Deadly Crafts were ONLY available in 1.08, IIRC they weren't enabled in 1.07 and were immediately patched out in 1.09. All of these crafting changes I actually ended up implementing in my Succulent mod. If you read the Succulent patch notes, you'll see that it in a way is some sort of Classic+ Mod, or a version of the LOD 1.07-1.09 era that went in a different direction than 1.10 (or continued more with the philosophy of Diablo II pre-LOD and the 1.07-1.09 era.

e) Different Uniques

Several of the 1.08 uniques are very powerful and different than the 1.09 versions. Most of the 1.09 uniques were improvements though. However, when we look at it from the lens of pre-LOD, if we DON'T want uniques or runewords to be the best or main thing people use, then we would want to limit the amount of strong uniques that exist so people spend more time using Rares or other item combinations in those slots. This means using the weaker uniques will want to make you just use a better Rare in that slot. Given that The Grandfather, Arkaine's Valor, Windforce are rarer drops in 1.08, it will take a while to find and also it may very well be that there are like 10 extremely powerful items max, more or less. This may be the perfect combination of powerful uniques, beautiful rares, sets, and the possibility for powerful rares through 1.08 crafting.

These are the things I can think about at the moment, but there may be a few more. Either way, I think there may be something special about 1.08 and I want to explore it more in the future.

Already found your channel and got Cactus running! But still, thanks for being so quick to help! 😁

I managed to get Cactus running today. I actually managed to beat the game on Hell difficulty and Hardcore before that with each character class except the Sorceress. 😬
You can believe me, it was a pain to play it on a tiny window, constantly managing to click outside of it. 😅
I am thinking about going to 1.04 once I'm done with all classes to try a Bowazon, since the ED on bows got fixed in that patch. There was another change in 1.05 to the damage calculation when using bows and crossbows, so I am still not sure of going to 1.05 directly.

Yea, MF is not really worth it in pre LoD. Something that I actually really like. I agree that rack and chest running is boring. Something I hate about the modern D2, is that the most efficient way to get High Runes, is running Lower Kurast for the Super Chests. I was never able to force myself to do that. Can't be the way you are supposed to play the game, imo. 😑

I never got to experience the early LoD patches before, so I am looking forward to that, too.

Nice. Trust me, go to 1.05b lol, the changes between 1.04 and 1.05 are not that big and you'll pretty much will want all of them. I've read all of the patch notes and there isn't anything that stood out to me between 1.04 vs 1.05 that would want me to specific choose 1.04 over it. These are the 1.05b patch notes (you are probably talking about the stuff in the Balance Changes section).

re: the tiny window, if you are running Cactus, then you most likely also have cnc-ddraw already installed (ddraw.dll and ddraw.ini), so there are a few things that come with this:

1. The window should no longer automatically minimize when you click out of it.
2. You'll be able to set the static container size of the Diablo II window. So let's say you are playing on a 2K resolution monitor, if you open the ddraw.ini and change the "width" and "height" to 1024x768, you'll still keep your window, but the window itself will be bigger, which is much more enjoyable. You can also change other options in there like "fullscreen=false" and "windowed=true" to have it start as a window by default.

I also forgot to mention two other things earlier:

1. You'll want to install Singling for the versions you are playing (this is another reason to play 1.05b, I've only implemented Singling for a few select versions between 1.00 - 1.08, and 1.00/1.05b are the only two versions pre-LOD I've made these changes to). Singling contains a set of non gameplay changes to improve the game. Things like fixing the CPU usage bug, allowing you to make hardcore chars without having to beat hardcore, and I've also implemented the 'players' command. It will be extremely slow and annoying to level up in Single Player pre-lod without that command. You can read everything that Singling has here. It's also easy to install, just copy/replace the files in your Platforms folder for the version you want with the ones provided with Singling. Then click Reset, and start it up again.

2. In regards to the 1.08 TC stuff, one important thing is that 1.08 still doesn't have the SuperUnique changes that were introduced in 1.09. Specifically this means that we can't really target farm a boss for drops like 1.09+. In a way I think this may actually be a good thing in that it means we actually need to go around the game world and clear maps and not just specifically try to kill one single monster. In the 1.09 patch notes, we see the following two lines:
  • Improved drops for placed (super) Unique monsters such as Bishibosh, Rakanishu, et. al.
  • Improved drops for certain quest monsters such as Blood Raven, The Countess, The Cow King, et. al.
These should be the changes that allowed people to start running bosses (changes located in TreasureClassEx.txt).

Let me know if you have any questions!

Just adjusted the resolution and screen size a while ago with ddraw.
I also got my OBS Studio ready to record all of it.
I'm pretty hyped! 😁

The window minimizing gave me some heart attacks at times (was playing Hardcore, afterall). Thankfully, the game got paused everytime it happened. 😮‍💨

I guess 1.05 would be the next patch to try then. Will be nice to finally play the feared original Bowazon. 😁

The window should not minimize if cnc-ddraw is working, so if it still minimizes that means it's not functioning correctly. Are you using the "-w" flag? If so remove that because that would override cnc-ddraw completely and you would be using the native windowing system of the game (so it will minimize if you click out).

Sorry, wasn't pretty clear in my previous post. It did minimize before I used ddraw. It is not doing it anymore and the mouse can't move outside the window.

Ah ok perfect. Glad to hear everything is working then! Have fun and stay safe in Sanctuary.

welcome

1.07 and 1.08 was well kinda messed up. runes for crafts. so they changed how crafts works it combines the rune item level with the character level but if you do some things the rune turn stail. so say a rune drops at an area level 30 and your character level 30 and the combined item level will get affexs up to level 60. but when a rune gos stail it for form the areal level down to item level 1. so now with a item level 1 ruin and character level 30 you get level 31 affexes only on crafts... think they did this to combat dupes of ruines. so leaving the game will make the ruins stail and a few other inb game things...

ya diablo 1 was cool i played if for a short bit found the dupe and used hacks like faster run walk and show items on the ground (dont no how many rings i lsot on the ground after being killed... but alot of theows hacks have viruses.. think theres a remake of diablo 1.

so it went from crafts saposbaly being "epic" to 99 of people getting crap rolls...and hating crafting... so crafting was bucherd from the start. i agree crafts, magics, rares are better then runewords but ya...

oh ya dr2 is op broke builds even more so. charms to - monsters resistant and socer - cold damage skill works...so just build a bliz socer and reck... then build a mosaic sin seems the meta...
