I started my first 1.05b character last night. I made a bowazon and left the game after killing the countess at level 9.

My usual starting plan is to get a 3os hunters bow, which I have, and socket it with rubies. I have found one of each gem except a ruby and amethyst.

Is there an easier way to find gems? Chests, champ packs, countess, etc.?

What's funny about this is I made my character hardcore and thought to myself that I would just put rubes in my chest plate and helm for extra life...and now I can't find a single ruby and I'm almost done with act 1.

Lol this is the wrong category for this. This is Diablo 1 Tristram not the destroyed Tristram in D2 Classic. Moving this back up to Rogue Encampment.

You’ll want to read my 1.05b Singling section to learn of some of the differences of original D2 Classic. It’s a completely different game than LoD and significantly more difficult.

It's funny how ever since I stumbled across Cactus and this forum I am continually mind blown by this game. I shouldn't be because I already know that I know nothing about the older versions of this game and never played a classic D2 character before.

I just read the post you linked and it cleared up a lot for me. I'm thinking I may drag 7 other characters along with me for the hell forge quest just to try to secure some gems.

So far I am having fun with classic and have put my 1.09b characters on pause, for now. I think what caught me most off guard is how useless the mercenary feels compared to what I am used to. It's strange not even being able to feed the rogue a potion when she starts getting low.

I am in cat 2 searching for any, wish me luck!

Yea mercs are useless and you basically can completely ignore them. As for gems, they are also not as useful in classic. Mostly just diamonds for a 3os shield and having some nice solid all res. Other than that if you are playing HC than rubies can help with HP, and sapphires for MP. So very standard RPG usage. The ranges on them are also different and I think lower than LOD. So you don’t need to do the hellforge as a group. You can enjoy the single character’s journey. The gear development and character progression of an SSF classic character on original 1.05b classic is wild.

I was browsing your YouTube videos of your WW barb on classic and saw you used polearms/lances. Is that a meta or personal preference? I was assuming there was an increased range for polearms with WW as opposed to a sword etc.

I guess both lol. Lances have the best distance and damage with the lowest amount of str requirement. You could use a great maul for awesome damage as well + increased damage against undead, but the range is a bit shorter I think and it has way higher str requirement.
