Old save files, usable in Belzebub?

So i have an old character last used around 2000. Played it with my friend which now is gone.
Is there any way to use this in Belzebub? I know i can use it in diablo and hellfire since it was last used in hellfire. But Belzebub with all the new quests and HD would be interesting to try.

I think you will need to start a new character.

I would assume not, but have you tried it? It's worth a shot if it's something you really want to happen. Just back up all your characters first, and then do some tests to see what the mod does after you load those character files.
