[Succulent] 1.09 Runewords

Post by Manny »

Here is a curious little thing. 1.09 Runewords ported into Succulent still retain all their attributes, but since the Runewords no longer exist, the item needs a new name. The game has therefore decided my Memory staff is now simply called "Ith"

Haha that makes sense since from my understanding, the game already generated the item so those stats are already fixed for that item itself. When people enable RWM (Runeword Mod), basically that's just allowing for the game to "allow you to create the item" in general, once it's created, you are good. So it definitely makes sense that "already created items" still keep their stats.

This is possible because Succulent is based on 1.09. In 1.10+, "Ith" runewords will be deleted, even in single player.

This was because of a dupe method back in the day that made them possible on battle.net. When gems/runes are socketed into items, they still exist as a separate item but the location is set to that item. Well, most dupes involved the trade window, which makes a temporary "copy" of all of your items.

The people in question would get this trade window in a bugged state, and then send a packet to sell the copies of those items to vendors. However this only sells the items without the gems. So you could buy back your runeword with all sockets empty, allowing you to then slam a bunch of jewels/better runes into it.

Post 1.10 Hybrid runewords became possible with the same method, where you instead put new runes into the item before the game ends to keep it from deleting. The runeword then has the name/runes of the other runeword, but keeps the properties of the one you made :)

I'm guessing that there may be some flag on a "runeword" item that is set and if detected, the game will try to find the name in a corresponding index. Since no Runewords are enabled, the index probably overflows and causes "Ith" to be selected. I'm guessing it doesn't matter what Runes are on the Runeword given the example above doesn't have an Ith. So in this case it being called Ith and people creating Ith hacked items back on the day is probably a coincidence (but probably they were called Ith back then due to the same underlying issue, but obviously the purpose and intent of item creation are different). Plus remember, this isn't possible in Succulent itself, but a consequence of "migrating" from Vanilla 1.09b to Succulent 1.09b, so a horizontal move in a way, not like a 1.05 to 1.07 time travel migration.
