I’ve really enjoyed Succulent for the past few weeks (pretty much ruined 1.10+ for me and now 1.09 is what I’m going to be playing almost exclusively, modded or vanilla).
One thing that’s been bothering me a bit is the bug that is present in both vanilla and Succulent, where if you leave the spawn radius of a superunique enemy before you kill it, said enemy will have their drops replaced with items Bishibosh would drop. Ever since I found out about it, I can’t not notice it when it happens.
Is there a chance that this could get fixed?
Also, two quick off-topic questions since I’m not that familiar with Diablo 2 (I’ve only had the game for a year or so because I fell in love with Diablo 1 after it released on GOG and I bought it on impulse, I’m \"fresh meat\"), is it possible to port Succulent characters to vanilla 1.09? I’m assuming that it’s possible to go vanilla>Succulent, but not the other way around (because of the stash, among other things).
The second question is whether or not Succulent makes any balance changes to the Druid, since I’m slightly interested in playing an Elemental/ Summoning druid, but I’ve heard it’s not really viable in 1.09.
Thank you for all of your work!

Hey rzh, Welcome to the forum. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying Succulent.

I do know of the super uniques bug but remember, that Succulent and Singling’s main goal is not to fix any bugs, but to build upon this foundation and retain any bugs/quirks that existed in the original. The bugs and quirks are part of the fun and every single version of the game has their own unique bugs / crashes / etc. Even though I know of the existence of the bug, I don’t really think about it much and it also doesn’t seem to really take away the enjoyment of the game for me either. If anything we need to adjust our play style around it a bit. For example, 1.07 and 1.08 has a bug where if you use your Merc in A4, there is a high chance that one of those corpse spitters will eat the Merc’s corpse! This means you permanently lose your merc. This was fixed in 1.09. So if we want to enjoy 1.07/1.08, we would need to kill our Merc if we want to play in A4 since we don’t want to lose it. But yea, every version has it’s own charm and combination of issues and other benefits.

Regarding off topic:

1. 1.09b and Succulent 1.09b are fully compatible. There are no file format incompatible changes. The only thing is that you’ll want to make sure that you remove enough items from your Stash in the Succulent character so that those items don’t get \"chopped off\" when you go to the Smaller stash. But that’s basically it.

2. Similar to the situation of not fixing any bugs, I’m also not really too interested in balancing the classes / items. I do have a similar philosophy to one of the creator’s of Diablo / Diablo II (Erich Schaefer) in that part of the fun of the game is to not have balanced classes and to allow characters to struggle in certain areas of the game due to their inherent weaknesses. It forces the player to adjust their play style to work around those issues. I definitely am aware that specific builds like Summon Necro and Summon Druid are not the best, but there are still combination of builds that can still work pretty effectively despite the differences. Also remember that 1.00 - 1.09 versions of the game have a different balance, hp, exp, etc than 1.10, so even though a build may \"suck\" or not be as good as a 1.10 counterpart, there are other builds that are much better due to no synergies and the other factors stated, so you can pretty much complete the game with any character and with most builds in pre 1.10 versions. Definitely try and play 1.09 (and/or any other version you are interested) with any build regardless of what people say, you’ll be surprised how far you can get, and it’s a great learning experience. Overall, I want to try and keep Succulent as close to 1.09 as possible and be careful with the changes I make. Of course nothing is of the table at the end of the day.

I hope this answers your questions :).

Hello,

I did not expect such a quick and detailed reply :D
The bug is a bit annoying but I can understand the thought process behind your decision and I guess that if I really want to fix it I can always learn how to do it myself (since unless I’m misinterpreting things, the 1.09b Final Edition mod DID fix it, so it is possible to do so via modding).
Platforms being so easy to use also means I can mess with the files as much as I have to without ruining my entire copy of the game.

I am glad the characters are fully compatible as leveling the same build again is boring and I do feel in the mood for pure vanilla sometimes.

And I definitely agree about the variety of builds possible in 1.09, it’s the main reason I consider it more to my liking than 1.10.
I’ve finished the game on Normal and entering Nightmare tonight on a CE/Poison Nova/ Bone Spirit Necro (I’m also trying to level a Hybrid LF/GA Amazon and a Tri-Element Sorc).
I guess I need to change my mentality about playing Diablo 2 since a lot of the discussion online seems to be about min-maxing, which is both boring but also seems to belong more to the post 1.10 era.

Yea definitely, I feel like after playing Diablo II for 20 years, min-maxing is not what keeps the game going for me. That’s why I’ve only been playing untwinked for all my characters and completely separate stashes. This let’s me just experience the game with any build that basically helps me get to finish hell. Doing this in many different versions for both Classic and LOD, and even throwing in HC occasionally for some additional variation, means that I can get a lot of different game experiences in a holistic (non min-maxing) type of away. You can take a look at this post (or the audio version) here for most info. Ultimately since Diablo I / II is basically a sandbox, eventually you’ll need to make your own goals in philosophy that will allow you to maximize the fun of the game. Also, feel free to open up a thread in the Rogue Encampment to post your adventures.
