For anyone who might be curious - playing Project Diablo 2 \"side by side\" a Cactus installation (same computer/same user account) works perfectly fine.
The steps I took were simple:
1. Created a new Diablo II folder with all the relevant game files from the 1.10 platform.
Note: Other patches may work. I decided to go with 1.10 on a whim.
2. Extracted the PD2 folder to my new/cloned Diablo II folder.
3. Ran the PD2 installer and pointed it to this new folder.
Some thoughts:
I recommend enabling the ’SkipToBnet’ option & being careful not to launch your Single Player/Vanilla characters from PD2. My feeling is this may corrupt your character files, but that could just be me being paranoid. I’m thankful for the ’backup’ function in Cactus, and I use it profusely, so even if the worst happens, I can easily restore my files.
PD2 is pretty wild. Graphically speaking, it’s very impressive what they’ve been able to accomplish (’native’ widescreen support, 60 fps, etc.), and there are some really neat features such as a loot filter, a dedicated charm inventory, and a myriad of other things.
That all being said, I very much doubt I will play this for long. IMO, PD2 feels bloated compared to the vanilla game. I’m also not used to playing online. Apparently I’ve grown to love the serenity/stillness of single player. The community also appears to be heavily ladder focused, and I don’t really have the time nor desire in partaking in that kind of gameplay. At any rate, I created a few non-ladder characters, and will level them up here and there when I need a break from vanilla.
Peace!
