Hey all,

So this forum and topic is specifically for discussing and playing the original Diablo 1 as developed by Blizzard North. I’ve also added discussion for Hellfire as well even though it is non-canon and Blizzard North (and South) were against it and not happy it was released. However, Blizzard North and South did have high level oversight into the development process for D1: Hellfire and provided some guard rails for what is and isn’t allowed to be added to the game, which from what’s documented here by Fandom, Synergistic Software mostly followed. However, \"mostly\" is the keyword here since they still added things that Blizzard North / South didn’t want including some easter eggs. But either way, due to Blizzard North and South still play testing it and having Executive Producer status in the game, even if they didn’t get everything they wanted, and Synergistic Software still slipped in their own stuff, I still believe that Hellfire is still worthwhile to be experienced, played, discussed, etc, even if it is non canon. Lastly, Hellfire was based off Diablo 1 v1.04, so any bugs that were fixed in Diablo 1 [1.05 - 1.09b] most likely still exist in Hellfire.

On a side note, if y’all don’t really care about running the same exact source that was provided by Blizzard North and Synergistic Software for their respective releases, I feel that the Devilution/X project started by my friend GalaXyHaXz is still highly appropriate and you would ultimately have a smoother experience playing that one. I’m a sucker for playing the original game with the original files (even if it has bugs lol, but that’s just me!). Feel free to use it and still chill on the forums and talk about D1 :).

 • DevilutionX (Preferred) - The continuation of the project where it uses Devilution as a base, but then includes a lot of QoL (Toggable via a configuration file). You’ll most likely want to use this one. I linked the Devilution link above for completeness.
 • Devilution - The core reversed engineered code that still keeps the bugs and all of that (Historical Archive).

DevilutionX 1.4.0 dropped recently. The biggest thing about it is probably added stash. I think they actually went too far with it with unlimited gold and tabs(or limited to 100, not sure about this one).

Yea I read the release notes recently (It’s been a good 6 months probably since the last release). Do you know if the stash is a shared stash (Like DiabloStash) or if it’s more \"Solo Self Found\" and just per character? (Ideally I would like it not to be a shared stash lol, but I’ve played D1 with DiabloStash with it being a shared stash and that was fun).

Whole stash is shared. I like playing untwinked chars so I just won’t share the loot between them.

Ah ... yea. Same here lol. For the new Cactus (D2), I actually describe how to achieve that untwinked / solo self found / per character effect haha. I also show that in my video.

I think I’m probably gonna stop recommending Devilution/X since it’s continuing to strive more and more away from original D1 (QoL is cool and all but there is a reason that I still play the original D1 code and that’s because I pretty much just want to play straight up - D1 - exactly as it was designed, with all of the (or lack of) features). It feels the most authentic that way. Slow walking and constantly looking for items on the ground via your mouse cursor always \"scanning\" is a hell of an experience in out of itself. Haha. It really brings you back.

That’s some really cool stuff!

LOL, yeah, one just has to experience that *ding* ring dropping in caves moment :D
I’m interested in devilutionX mostly from modding perspective.

Lol true story (re: ring drop). Yea Devilution/X for modding purposes is amazing!

I’ve been playing DevilutionX and really enjoying it - I like the stash as a substitute for dumping items on the ground (and you don’t have to pick favorites when changing difficulty), and almost all of the quality of life changes in the \"vanilla\" mode feel like things the game should’ve had to start. It still very much feels like the D1 I remember, but without needing to jump through hoops to play on Nightmare and without silly bugs like the Mana Shield one.

Cheers to galaxyhaxz and friends for their work - it’s absolutely stellar having this game in 2023
