The orb always pierce, but it does not do any damage, because the skill is not referenced, while each orb's ice bolt and the nova's ice bolts does, but the piercing is disabled. Artisan's prefix hasn't changed since 1.09 (beside increasing its frequency), but circlet item types can only have up to 1 socket. The information is based on ItemTypes.txt and MagicPrefix.txt in data/global/excel for 1.09b and 1.14d.

I sincerely agree with most of the points in this essay, but I must say each player plays the game on its own terms and this is much more apparent in the single player.
